But the building itself actually had a rocky start. It was completed in 1931 which was in the heart of the Great Depression. The building management could not find companies to rent (or lease). The building was actually nicknamed the “Empty State Building”. But one thing that did keep the building afloat is tourism.

Funded By Tourism
The Empire State Building Observation Deck is a large part of how the Empire State Building stayed solvent. It continues to be a tremendous money maker even today. One thing you should be aware about the Empire State Building Observation Deck is that it gets pretty crowded, very quickly, especially on weekends. Waiting lines can be in excess of two hours. So if you don’t want to waste time waiting on those long lines, make sure you get there before 10:00 AM. This should give you plenty of time to see the site.
Certainly you could go without seeing the observation deck when you visit New York City, but why would you? After all, you are able to see the entire city from that venue. Millions of others before you lay claim to the visit and you will seem out of place if you say that you went to New York City and didn’t visit the Empire State Building Observation Deck.
